Tawau: Contrary to claims when it was first introduced, a raid here by Marine police found that the MyKad could actually be forged - and easily at that by using nothing more than household items. A marine police team arrested an Indonesian with nine previous convictions for forgery and drug abuse who used a nail polisher, among other chemicals, to duplicate the cards.
Police believe the 40-year-old suspect had just finished forging MyKads and Malaysian driving licences when they raided the house at Mile 5 shortly after midnight, last Friday, following a tip off.
Acting District Marine Operations Force Commanding Officer, ASP Mohamad Ismail was, himself, surprised to learn how simple household items could be used to forge the identification document.
Speaking to reporters, he said the team recovered nine Malaysian driving licences, 56 copies of driving licences, six pieces of plastic with printed information for driving licences, 55 photographs of people, four Mykads and an old Malaysian identification card, among others.
The man would change the identity, photograph and address on the original MyKads and driving licences.
"He would see the type of letter on the original MyKads or licences using a microscope to copy details of new fake details," he said.
Mohamad said the man had been doing this for a month and charged between RM200 and RM300 for a fake document.
He said the suspect, who has a valid passport, was also tested positive for drugs.
