JAKARTA, Feb 24 (Bernama) -- The search and rescue (SAR) team has plucked 17 bodies of the 70 people believed buried in a landslide at Desa Tenjolaya, Pasirjambu, Bandung.

Fifteen bodies had been identified and several had been buried in areas near the tea growing area.

National Board for Disaster Management (BNPB) chief Dr Priyadi Kardono told Bernama Wednesday, the SAR operation was stopped at 11am because of heavy rainfall, raising concern of more landlsides.

Hundreds of those who escaped the tragedy were being put up in tents or staying with relatives in nearby villages.

Vice-President Boediono visited the scene this morning and later met with the villagers.

Priyadi said geologists from the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry were at the scene to investigate the cause of the landslide.

Two heavy machineries managed to reach the location to speed up the SAR operation. The missing list had shortened 29 from 38 due to duplication.

He said the victims were believed to be tea farm workers as the landslide buried the workers quarters and office building.

BNPB was studying whether the landslide was the after efffects of an earthquake in West Java in Sept last year causing cracks to appear in the hills.

The SAR team had to travel three hours by road from the main road at Jambupasir to reach the location as the landslide had cut off the area.

The remote location forced the SAR team and media covering the landslide to use sattelite communication.

Authorities only learnt of the landslide seven and a half hours after the landslide which occured at 8am Tuesday.

Desa Tenjolaya in Pasirjambu sub-district, Bandung, West Java is a seven hour road trip from Jakarta.
